La Basilica di Santa Croce a Firenze

The Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence

Many think that the most representative religious place for Italians is the Basilica of San Pietro in Vaticano.

Indeed this may be true if we speak of Catholics! Furthermore, it must be remembered that this immense church is not located in the Italian territory, but in the Vatican City State.

In this "easy-to-easy" lesson we want to show how there is a place, inscribed in the perimeter of a church, which is to be truly considered as the Temple of the Italians: it is the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence.

Here the greatest geniuses who saw the light in Italy are buried, or at least remembered with a plaque; the great poet Ugo Foscolo remembers both the church and, above all, the wits, in an immense work of Italian literature, "Dei Sepolcri" (1807).
