La Basilica Inferiore

The Lower Basilica

The construction of the Lower Basilica began under the supervision of Brother Elia in 1228 and ended in 1230, when the saint's body was brought to the small crypt.

The lower basilica, which has Romanesque features, has a cross-shaped plan consisting of a single nave with three bays with pointed vaults which are supported by low, squat pillars.

From this you enter the crypt that houses the remains of S.

Francesco.

The walls and vaults of the church were frescoed by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and other illustrious artists of the time.
