Il territorio

The territory

The city Rome was founded on a marshy plain.

However, this was a bad area to live in because it was considered unhealthy due to the presence of insects that transmitted diseases such as malaria.

It was therefore considered dangerous to humans.

The local populations had therefore chosen to build their homes and villages on the wooded hills on the left bank of the Tiber.

The river was in fact very important for agriculture because it allowed to irrigate the fields.

It was also convenient for the transport of people and things, which took place by swimming or on rafts, along a navigable stretch.

With the birth of Rome the population concentrated in the areas surrounding the seven hills.

These were: the Palatine, the Capitoline, the Aventine, the Celian, the Esquiline, the Viminale and the Quirinale.
